‘Listen - do you remember I said that I had almost noticed something in that room, besides the gas-fire, yesterday morning?' demanded Peter. 'And I couldn't call to mind what it was because just as I was noticing it, you shouted to me ?'

'Yes. I remember,' said Jack. 'What was it, then?'

And I noticed that the plant was alive and healthy - not all dead and withered as it should have been, left in an empty house for weeks. Primulas need a lot of water.'

'You mean - someone had been watering it?' asked Jack.

'Yes,' said Peter, beginning to calm down. 'I looked into the pot just now and the soil was wet.
